Digital Marketing and You: Finding your place in a growing field
By Evan Sadasivan
Earlier this week, Hunter gave an overview of the marketing field. Today, I want to focus particularly on digital marketing. Digital marketing distinguishes itself from traditional forms of marketing not only in its medium, but in its method as well. Although the ultimate goal of both is to persuade customers to purchase a product or service, the steps used to attain this end are very different. In digital marketing, professionals use web analytics, search engine optimization, viral marketing, and other industry specific techniques. For more information on the field, click here.
So, why should you get involved in the digital marketing field? There are several reasons, actually. First, the industry is currently burgeoning. With online markets booming and new positions opening in companies across the nation, AOL Jobs predicts substantially increased demand for social media strategists, online community managers, search engine optimization specialists, and various others.

Second, employers are looking for people just like you. The skills required for a job in digital marketing are skills that most college students have been unwittingly developing for the past few years. Along with writing and analytical skills (which UD students excel at), an aptitude for technology is included on award winning writer Linda Ray’s short list of necessary abilities for success in digital marketing. It gets better, though. These are not just any technologies. She notes, “Skills using social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are among those you’ll need to use as integral parts to formulate and execute your marketing plans.” In other words, you just may be the perfect candidate for a position in the digital marketing field!
